Each of us has a vital role to play by becoming actively involved in crime prevention. We the Residents of Puteri 12 possess a much specialised knowledge of our neighbourhood which even our local police may find hard to achieve.
A police officer might not recognise someone in your garden as a stranger but your neighbour might. It is this kind of awareness and willingness to help that is the basis of neighbourhood watch or home watch.
By letting our security guards or the police know of anything suspicious you see or hear, you are helping to reduce the opportunities for crime to occur and more difficult for criminals, and more likely that crime can be reduced.
Quite recently, two different houses in our neighbourhood were robbed. Both robberies happened during the daylight hours and we believe that both robberies were done by the same person or group because both break-ins were similar.
When a house is burgled it is more likely to be burgled again than a house that has not been. If it does happen it is likely to be within the next few weeks. After all, a burglar has been into the home found the weak points in its security and had a good look at the contents and layout. So stepping up the security of a home straight away can prevent a further crime.
Even with our security guards patrolling our neighbourhood, we as a community of Puteri 12 should work together to watch over our neighbourhood and help to look out for any suspicious activity in our area. We should keep an eye on strange vehicles moving around our neighbourhood or suspicious strangers and if you suspect such activities, you have to respond fast by informing our security guards to investigate or if you are sure that a crime is taking place, call the police. When suspecting criminal activities, you are encouraged not to intervene but to contact authorities.
By being a good neighbour and keeping an eye out for anything suspicious you can help to make our community more secure. These are some of the things you should report:
- Strangers knocking on front doors or peering through windows and then disappearing round the back, or loitering suspiciously.
- Strangers hanging around our neighbourhood, playing fields etc and approaching children.
- Strange unrecognised vehicles moving about or hanging around our neighbourhood.
- Open windows in houses where the owners are out or on holiday.
- Strangers trying car doors.
- Anything that you believe is suspicious.
- An exact description of what you have seen
- The time
- The place
- The person(s) involved: approximate age, sex, colour, height, build, unusal characteristics, clothing worn, and any other distinguishing features
- The vehicles involved: registration number (even part of this number might help), make and model (if known), colour, condition and direction of travel
